Stairs In Oxford - Magic In Detail

Following the completion of our Quatrefoil House project, we have been reflecting on the multiple components that make up the richness of this unique Oxford home. Each element has been meticulously designed to enhance the architectural experience for our clients.

One of the most notable pieces within the home is the internal staircase. This powerful component connects the four floors and envelopes our custom 12-metre-long rain light as featured on our objects page. The staircase sits within an atrium in the heart of the existing building, floodlit by a skylight. However, the staircase appears to hover within this space, with visual gaps between each flight and the corresponding landing.

The staircase consists of a complex series of black American walnut panelling with matt black accents. Due to the constraints of the existing structural openings, the component was meticulously drawn and modelled in our studio and in collaboration with a specialist fabricator, to ensure a perfect fit.

Our usual care and attention was devoted to this bespoke piece, the same process we apply to our architecture at every level of detail.

We believe that beauty is in the balance of the parts.
